Paul Merson has urged Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur to sign Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez, with Harry Kane travelling in the opposite direction.
The conversation was about Harry Kane‘s future and why he shouldn’t go for Bayern Munich, with one analyst speculating that the England captain could join Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City.
Merson dismissed the proposal at first, but then said that Julian Alvarez may go to Tottenham as a’softener,’ with the champions of England eventually receiving their man, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (08/08/23 at 7:10 pm).
Guardiola tried everything to sign England captain Daniel Levy a few years back, but Daniel Levy held hard and refused to let his player go.
But now that Kane‘s contract has expired, the cards are no longer on Levy‘s table, which is why he has been speaking with Bayern Munich about perhaps selling his star player to the Bundesliga champions.
Merson recently expressed his thoughts on Kane‘s potential move to Bayern, and now he has reacted to the likelihood of him joining Man City with Treble-winner Alvarez.
“Unless Tottenham turns around and says, ‘We are willing to give you Kane and then you give us Alvarez,'” Merson remarked. “As a softener, because Alvarez will score goals.”
Tottenham should stick with Kane.
A player like Alvarez would be ideal for Spurs or any other big Premier League club, but Guardiola will not let him leave.
And Levy should do the same for Kane, telling Bayern to throw whatever money they want at their all-time leading striker.
Instead of selling him for less than £100 million, just swat it away, stand firm, and keep maybe your greatest-ever player on board.
