Sheffield United will return to Premier League action on Sunday when they face Brighton and Hove Albion.
Sheffield United’s win over Wolves helped “paper over the cracks” at Bramall Lane, according to Paul Merson, and he expects them to falter against Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend. The team of Paul Heckingbottom travels to the south coast looking to build on their first Premier League victory of the season.
However, ex-Arsenal and England international Merson believes the Blades will lose 2-0 on Sunday at the American Express Stadium. “There is such a gulf between the top teams and the ones at the bottom of this league now,” the Sky Sports pundit told Sportskeeda. Football is a funny game, I know. When certain teams reach a certain level, it is extremely difficult for others to catch up. That is why I see nothing but a Brighton victory here.
“Sheffield got one of their best results of the season last weekend (2-1 win) against Wolves.” However, if you watched the game, you would notice that they won due to a last-second penalty that should not have been given. It just helped them cover up the cracks, and Brighton are far too good for the Blades.
“There are too many referees in the PGMOL who know the rules but not the game.” If VAR is to improve, they must hire referees with actual football experience.”
Chris Sutton has also dismissed United‘s chances of pulling off an upset. In his weekly BBC predictions, the former Celtic striker predicts Brighton to win 3-0.
“Brighton’s issue this season is the demands of European football on their squad – they play Ajax in Amsterdam on Thursday night, so it will affect them again here,” he went on to say.
“Sheffield United will be buzzing after their first win of the season last week against Wolves.” Their strategy here will be to sit in and frustrate the Seagulls, but I doubt they can keep ‘s side quiet.
“I wasn’t sure whether to give the Blades a goal, because of Brighton’s defensive record – they did not keep a clean sheet in any of their first 11 games of the season, so maybe this is the day they manage it.”
