According to Phil Hay, Archie Gray has agreed to a new long-term contract that will keep him with Leeds United until 2028.
Hay has referred to the development as a “substantial agreement” for the West Yorkshire club in a piece published via The Athletic on January 16.
The midfielder’s contract was originally scheduled to expire in2025, but after having a breakthrough season with the Whites—making 26 starts across all competitions, the most of any Leeds player before turning 18—he has now further pledged his future to his boyhood team.
Because of Gray’s outstanding performances, some of Europe’s best teams were taking notice. On November 10, 2023, the Daily Mail published an online story stating that Liverpool, a Premier League team, was getting ready to make a summer bid of £40 million for the 17-year-old.
Huge
The significance of this news for Leeds United and its supporters cannot be overstated. Not only have they locked down an impressive talent for many years to come, which is a sign of intent, but when Premier League clubs do eventually start sniffing around the player in the summer, it means the Whites will be able to charge a hefty cost.
Rarely does an academy graduate, especially one who has not yet turned eighteen, have the kind of influence that Gray has had on a first team.
Leeds will be pleased that he has committed his future to the team. He is also making good progress on the international front, having just made his England Under-20 debut. He is undoubtedly a player with the ability to reach the pinnacle of the game.
