Phil Hay bristles about the’shambles’ he witnessed in Leeds United’s win over Preston North End

Phil Hay was enraged at what he called a “shambles” from Leeds United in their 2-1 victory over Preston North End on Sunday (21 January).

The visitors took the lead after only two minutes at Elland Road through Will Keane, but the home side’s defense left a lot to be desired.
The Athletic reporter Hay, tweeting on his official X account (21 January), was not pleased with what he witnessed from the home side.
“A mess of a free kick from Ben Whiteman. Liam Millar takes the header back across goal and fires a shot into the six-yard box.
“Will Keane is there to complete the job with ease. First, assault. 0-1 #lufc.”

Dan James equalised shortly after, before Joel Piroe converted a thrilling injury-time penalty to give Leeds a 2-1 victory. Leeds sit four points behind second-place Southampton.
Should perform better.

From a Leeds perspective, this was a rather awful start, with the defence completely out of sync following Ben Whiteman‘s free-kick delivery into the area. Keane could not pass up the opportunity, and it was a moment that no one wearing a home shirt will remember with pride.

Dan James levelled the scoring barely four minutes later to restore parity, but it is the kind of moment that Leeds can ill-afford in the second half of this season as the fight for automatic promotion heats up.
Southampton won against Swansea City on Saturday (20 January), and Ipswich play table-toppers Leicester City on Monday (22 January), so there will be plenty of twists and turns in the coming weeks.

Hopefully, Leeds will not have too many more defensive nightmares in the coming weeks, as they need to be more alert because not every game will result in stunning triumphs like this.

In other Leeds United news, departing Leo Hjelde released a message after an official statement at Elland Road.
