Phil Hay: Leeds United prefers that Ben Johnson sign a loan deal

According to Phil Hay, Leeds United is trying to strengthen their attacking midfield area this month and is hoping to recruit a new full-back.

Hay, in a piece for The Athletic, asserts that Leeds‘ priorities have shifted over the last two weeks due to two unexpected departures. Djede Spence returned to Tottenham Hotspur, and Luke Ayling went on loan to Middlesbrough for the remainder of the season.

More resources are now required for Daniel Farke‘s back four. The team still has open loan spots, so this month the Whites will try to get some deals signed.

West Ham defender Ben Johnson is also on their list, and they have been connected to Burnley’s Connor Roberts and Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams.

According to Hay, Leeds would prefer a loan deal for the 23-year-old defender, who will have his contract expire at the end of the regular season. If West Ham is eager to get rid of him, they would anticipate paying a loan fee.

A clever addition?

Johnson is still without a new contract at West Ham after falling down the hierarchy at the London club.
He can play on either flank and has a ton of Premier League experience. Johnson was one of the best young players to come out of the academy just a few seasons ago, and David Moyes was using him on a regular basis.

But he’s lost his spot in the team, so leaving the London Stadium could be a good move for him.

Williams was previously considered by Leeds in the summer, but Williams is not going to be moved, according to Nuno Espirito Santo, the new manager of Nottingham Forest. Johnson would be a wise addition to the team, but it’s unclear if Leeds will cover the loan price.
