Phil Hay: New Leeds signing wants permanent deal after last-minute loan is confirmed

Connor Roberts wants a permanent Leeds United move after his deadline-day Elland Road loan from Burnley was completed, according to Phil Hay.

According to Phil Hay, Connor Roberts has previously stated that he is “quietly hopeful” of signing a permanent contract with Leeds United.

The Athletic journalist reported on the outlet’s website late on 1 February, after the Welsh defender’s loan move was been announced, that the club presently has no option or duty to keep the Burnley player at Elland Road beyond the summer.

However, the 28-year-old, who fills the Whites’ transfer window “priority” of signing a right-back after Djed Spence and Lyke Ayling left, is under contract at Turf Moor until the end of next season.

According to Hay, he “looks likely to pursue his longer-term career elsewhere” after becoming Leeds’ only new signing in midseason.

Hay wrote on Twitter: “Conor Roberts joins Leeds United on loan from Burnley. I spoke to him previously. Strong hints that he wants the shift to be permanent.

“It’s been a while since I’ve heard or seen someone so excited to be joining Leeds. Potentially a very good signing, in a position where Leeds desperately needed an extra option.”

Audition

It took until 23 minutes after the window closed for Leeds United to declare one of the many defensive options they had considered to assist Daniel Farke boost his squad after the German chose to let Spence and Ayling go.

If Roberts can have the same impact as the other Welsh loanee at Elland Road this season, Joe Rodon, he will have a fair chance of remaining long-term.

He joins two other international teammates, Ethan Ampadu and Dan James, who, like Rodon, have been standouts for Farke this season.

The manager is arguably only one or two injuries away from a defensive crisis, particularly on the left, where Junior Firpo and Sam Byram are near-constant fitness concerns.

However, having brought Charlie Cresswell back into playing contention after a disagreement over playing time, as well as signing a specialist right-back who could play on the left if necessary, this appears to make a significant difference.

And if he is so excited to be at the club that it has stood out in particular to Hay, it should be a good omen for him to integrate quickly, especially with a promotion fight in full force.
