According to Phil Hay, Leeds United tried to make a last-ditch move for West Ham defender Ben Johnson but were turned down.
The Athletic journalist reported (2 February) that the Whites had looked into the English defender, whose contract was expiring in East London, but the Premier League club wanted him to sign a new agreement.
Leeds United and Crystal Palace were both interested in the right-back, but the Hammers declined any offers because they wanted him to stay at the London Stadium after Thursday’s deadline.
The Whites ultimately announced the last-ditch transfer of Burnley defender Connor Roberts to Elland Road, signing on a temporary loan until the end of the season.
Hay went on to say: “They took a look at Ben Johnson, with his contract running down rapidly, but West Ham want the 24-year-old to sign a new deal and had knocked back an enquiry from Crystal Palace about a permanent transfer earlier this week.”
Roberts relief
It was a difficult window for Leeds United due to the club’s FFP problems and the consideration of numerous full-back targets who appeared to be real winners if Daniel Farke had signed them.
Johnson of West Ham was undoubtedly in that category, considering his profile, age, experience, and promise, and with the Whites sorely in need of a right-back, he filled the bill well.
However, the Hammers’ position was understandable, and there was little Leeds United could do despite his contract expiring, so they were obliged to go elsewhere.
While some fans may claim that they stumbled across Roberts‘ acquisition, it’s worth noting that the Burnley defender had been a long-term goal and, given his experience and know-how at Championship level, was likely the finest choice available.
Roberts knows what it takes to gain promotion from the Championship, having won the title with the Clarets last season, and that experience might be extremely beneficial to a young Leeds United club.
He hasn’t played much this season and may need some time to regain his sharpness and fitness, but Farke will be adding a seasoned professional to the club at a crucial time.
