Blues may have to wait a little longer for a critical double boost as another derby against West Ham beckons.
Mauricio Pochettino has stated that Christopher Nkunku and Levi Colwill are “on the line” in their individual injury recoveries, but will not be ready to face Tottenham.
The Argentine must contend with a 14-man injury list for Thursday’s next London derby at Stamford Bridge, but has claimed he will give some “kids” a chance to play.
However, the Blues also stated on the same day that Colwill and Nkunku are back in “full training”.
Pochettino later clarified why the pair are participating completely at Cobham but are unable to participate in the London derby.
“They were training,” Pochettino said reporters. “Normally, we prepare for the game tomorrow. We completed several set pieces, tactical work, and meetings.
“They are almost there. They are on the queue but do not cross it. We hope they cross the line for West Ham on Sunday.
“We hope. However, we will have to wait until tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday to see if they can handle the challenge. According to the website, they are close and nearly capable.
Thiago Silva may have played his final game for Chelsea after suffering a groyne injury in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. The Brazilian has only five matches to regain full health and participate after announcing his planned summer departure this week.
The 39-year-old’s exit will significantly reduce the average age of an already young Chelsea side, but Pochettino insists that new leaders emerge following Silva’s departure.
“I think the good thing after 10 months here is we are part of the process and the leaders of the process to help the players,” he said.
“Today, because I believe it is not just us, but too many clubs that are in this condition. True, these kind of players, such as Thiago, have become increasingly rare to find over the years.
“We’re talking about a 39-year-old. This player’s profile is not easily found. I believe it is about how we can help as a coaching staff.
“We are helping, and for sure, they are going to be better and more mature next season.”
