Postecoglou discloses one aspect of Ryan Mason’s work with Spurs players.

Ryan Mason has been working hard with the Tottenham players on their set-piece preparations, according to Ange Postecoglou.

Last season, Spurs enjoyed a lot of success on set-pieces and deadball situations, which may be attributed to set-piece expert Gianni Vio.

The Italian left the club this summer, and there have been noticeable variations in Tottenham‘s approach to set-pieces this season.

The Lilywhites are taking more short corners, and it was one of these situations that resulted in their goal against Luton Town, with James Maddison picking up the ball out wide and leaving a defender for dead before finding Micky van de Ven, who turned the ball home from close range.

It was the 26-year-old’s sixth assist (along with two goals) in eight games this season, and Postecolgou revealed that the attacking midfielder can be a lethal weapon if he gets the ball in the appropriate spots.

At Spurs, Ryan Mason has been training on set pieces.

When questioned about Maddison‘s performance against Luton, the Australian told Football.London, “Yeah, the way we started, he was extremely important – played some great balls, though, and opened them up with Sonny.”

“And then, in the second half, we were going to need his clever thinking and outside-the-box thinking, and Mase works really hard with the guys on set-pieces, and he always says, if it’s on early, get it early.”

“An early corner or set piece shows Madders’ brain working before they’re fully organised, creating a bit of magic for Micky to score.”

“He’s been fantastic, but I think he’d be the first to admit that it’s due to a lot of hard work from everyone.” He’s free to play the way he likes, and he has to work hard, but he’s got men on his side making sure he gets the ball in the correct locations and creating runs for him to do what he does.”

Maddison‘s skill leading up to the goal was spectacular. Even though he was being closed down, the offensive midfielder displayed incredible balance to get past the defender and maintained his calm to pick out Van de Ven inside the area.
