Postecoglou’s own deal is at peril as Tottenham launch a €50 million bid for Japan ace

According to sources, Ange Postecoglou has approved a bid for Takefusa Kubo, a Tottenham Hotspur attacking player.

Kubo is a 23-year-old winger who prefers to play on the right flank, but can also play on the left or in the No. 10 position if necessary. Despite his young age, he has already had a remarkable career, having represented Barcelona at the juvenile level, being signed by Real Madrid, and playing for FC Tokyo, Villarreal, and Getafe.

Kubo was in the Madrid system from 2019 to 2022, but he never played for the Spanish giants due to various loan spells away from the Bernabeu.

Two years ago, Real Sociedad eventually offered Kubo a permanent home by signing him for €6.5 million.

Since then, the wideman has contributed 16 goals and 14 assists in 85 games for Sociedad. That is hardly the most lethal record, but Kubo has acquired a reputation as one of La Liga’s top dribblers.

The left-footed attacker excels at chasing down opponents with his lightning-fast pace before shooting or passing to a teammate.

Tottenham‘s recruitment chiefs have been quite impressed by Kubo‘s performances and are aiming to bring the Japan international, who has previously been connected with Liverpool and Arsenal, to England.

According to Spanish media, Spurs are ‘keen’ to reinforce Postecoglou’s forward ranks and have set a €50 million (£42 million) bid for Kubo.

A deal at that amount would net Sociedad a sizable profit, though Spurs may have to boost their offer to reach an agreement. That is because Kubo’s contract runs until June 2029 and includes a €60 million (£51 million) release clause.

If Spurs‘ initial proposal for Kubo is rejected, Postecoglou will urge club officials to come back with a better offer that matches the player’s release clause, since the manager has designated him as a ‘coveted target’ for the summer.

TEAMtalk has learned from sources that Aston Villa is also interested in Kubo, setting up a potential transfer fight between the two sides.

Kubo’s arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would provide problems for current right winger Brennan Johnson.

Spurs paid Nottingham Forest £47.5 million to get Johnson last summer, and he has five goals and ten assists in 34 outings for the North London club thus far.

Johnson has faced criticism for his inconsistent form and lack of calmness in front of goal.

Postecoglou appears to be looking for alternatives, and Kubo’s signing may result in Johnson seeing restricted playing time next season.
