Promotional hopefuls Burnley and Leeds play off a dismal draw
It was billed as a battle of attack versus defense between Daniel Farke’s high-scoring Leeds side and Scott Parker’s defensive specialists, but it was the latter that prevailed, as Burnley have now gone more than 10 and a half hours without conceding, having only conceded nine goals in 29 league games this season.
The draw moved Leeds two points clear of Sheffield United at the top of the league, while Burnley remained third, one point behind the Blades.
Leeds had some early positive indications, with Jayden Bogle and then Brenden Aaronson finding room to run through the midfield, but it would not last long as Burnley closed up and shut off the center of the park.
Leeds had half a penalty claim before the break when Sam Byram collided with a diagonal ball from James, but referee Josh Smith ruled Anthony’s shoulder barge was acceptable.
The half finished with neither goalie tested, but if the opening 45 minutes were lacking in goal-mouth action, the second half was much worse.
Both teams battled to break down the other, as strong winds and unrelenting rain hampered an increasingly gritty game.
Both management made modifications in search of a spark. Mateo Joseph and Largie Ramazani replaced Manor Solomon and Joel Piroe for Leeds, whilst Parker brought in Brighton loanee Jeremy Sarmiento to replace Lyle Foster.
Leeds rallied late on, with Bogle cutting into the area, but his attempt was saved by Josh Cullen. James received the ball from the subsequent corner, but Trafford pushed his rising half-volley over the bar.
It was the only shot on target in a poor match.
