Tottenham are plotting an audacious bid for one forward who has impressed across Europe this season.
Tottenham Hotspur are eager to add more quality to their assault next season, and they are willing to sacrifice an out-of-favour first-team player to do it.
Ange Postecoglou has operated with a very small team in his first season as Tottenham manager, but he appears to have identified where he needs to strengthen ahead of a European challenge next season.
While defenders are a top priority, supplementing the front line of Richarlison, Heung-min Son, Brennan Johnson, and Dejan Kulusevski appears to be part of the summer transfer agenda.
According to Italian daily Calciomercato, Tottenham will try to lure Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson to north London by offering Djed Spence, who is now on loan at the Serie A club, in a swap deal.
Gudmundsson has been Genoa’s best scorer this season, with 13 goals and three assists in 31 games. Impressive, given that the Icelandic 26-year-old plays mostly as an offensive midfielder for a team now ranked 12th in Italy’s premier league.
Transfermarkt values Gudmundsson at £19 million, and he has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for much of the season. With his contract expiring in 2026, Genoa could attempt to cash in on him this summer, when his stock is at its peak.
Spurs, on the other hand, are apparently looking to sign Gudmundsson in an ambitious swap deal with Middlesbrough‘s Djed Spence, who signed for £20 million in the summer of 2022. The 23-year-old has only made six appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, with loan spells at Rennes last season, Leeds earlier this season, and now Genoa following his big-money deal.
Spence, who joined Genoa in January, has made 11 appearances, six of which have been in the starting XI.
Our View
As a result, it appears improbable that Genoa will agree to a simple swap arrangement. Tottenham would certainly have to offer Spence-plus-cash to sign Gudmundsson, given how essential his goals have been to the team this season. Furthermore, Spence is not comparable to the Icelandic international, thus Genoa would have to invest in attack regardless of the swap arrangement.
