Robin Koch is having a ‘hard old time’ as the Leeds United loanee makes ‘ridiculous’ errors in his outing on Sunday.

According to Seb Stafford-Bloor, Robin Koch had a “bad old time” in Eintracht Frankfurt‘s 1-1 tie with Mainz, as the Leeds United loanee gave up a goal and then was booked.

The Athletic journalist reacted on Twitter Sunday (27 August) after the German center-back “gifted” Mainz the opener by “clattering his own goalkeeper” and then was issued a yellow card for a “ridiculous lunge on the touchline.”

Following the red card of teammate Ansgar Knauff, his side eventually salvaged a point with a last-minute equaliser from Omar Marmoush.

Koch left Elland Road this summer after using his contract’s relegation release provision, but with his Whites contract ending at the end of the season, he won’t be back.

He is not the only one among the multitude of first-team departures who struggled this weekend, with Union Berlin’s Brenden Aaronson sent off after 21 minutes.

Rough

Leeds United fans will be all too acquainted with Stafford-Bloor‘s depiction of Koch‘s defensive play, as the guy who has remained a virtual constant in the Whites back line for the past two seasons.

Despite this, the German international drew several transfer links [90min, 16 June] and was signed by Frankfurt, just as Roma swooped for both Diego Llorente and Rasmus Kristensen, and afterwards Max Wober left for Borussia Monchengladbach.

As a result, it appears that the perception throughout Europe is that being a part of an underperforming Leeds defensive, which was the worst in the Premier League last season, is a problem with the club rather than the players.

None of those who have left Elland Road on loan this summer have improved their standing among the club’s supporters, but for Koch, it matters less than most because he isn’t returning to Yorkshire next year.

Only time will tell for the others, as Willy Gnonto‘s goalscoring return to the club against Ipswich on Saturday helped him after he became highly unpopular after missing the previous three games while wanting to leave.

Koch has started all four of Frankfurt‘s games this season, although he also started 36 of 28 Premier League games last season.

This summer, parting ways made sense in either case, but the fact that his exit only yielded a small loan fee rather than a proper transfer return was obviously frustrating.
