Conor Gallagher ‘too pricey’ for Tottenham, but they may reconsider July deal
Tottenham will not do business on deadline day, but they may try to buy Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher during the next transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur will not sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher before the January transfer window ends, Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge has told GIVEMESPORT.
Bridge, reporting live from Hotspur Way, claimed that Spurs will have no inbound business on deadline day, including a late move for the Blues’ midfielder.
Tottenham are long-time lovers.
Tottenham’s interest in Gallagher was one of the big stories of the summer window’s deadline day, and the drama has resurfaced as we near the end of the January equivalent. Spurs made a £40 million deal for the England international, but the Blues rejected it and requested a further £5 million. Their London competitors did not follow up, mainly due to their inability to collect sufficient finances by selling Tanguy Ndombele (loaned to Galatasaray) and Emile-Hojbjerg (still at the club).
The Independent mentioned Gallagher as a key target for the North London club again in January, claiming he was ‘top of the list’ for Spurs. However, no agreement has been reached, and a last-minute transfer from Stamford Bridge has been ruled out.
There were no Spurs signings on deadline day.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Michael Bridge dismissed the possibility of Tottenham signing Gallagher at this stage of the transfer window, stating that ‘nothing will happen’ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on deadline day. However, the Sky Sports reporter suggested that a deal for the midfielder could take place in the summer.
“Nothing will happen here today. Despite whispers and reports, nothing has actually happened with Gallagher in January. This is pretty bizarre. He is Chelsea’s captain, but because of PSR and the fact that he would count as pure profit, he has always been a player Chelsea was willing to listen to bids for, despite the fact that Chelsea and Tottenham are rivals. He’s too pricey right now, but they might revisit it in the summer.”
Gallagher’s future is unknown at Stamford Bridge.
Gallagher‘s future will be scrutinised even if he remains a Chelsea player once the transfer season ends, as expected. Despite being given the armband by Mauricio Pochettino for much of the season, the subtleties of Profit and Sustainability Rules make him potentially more valuable to the Blues as a financial asset than a player on the pitch.
Chelsea appear to be open to the possibility of cashing in if the appropriate offer is made, and that stance on a player who has been one of their finest performers this season has split opinion. But by the summer, Chelsea may have forced their own hand. Gallagher’s contract will have only 12 months left at that point, and it appears unlikely that the club will let him play out the final year before letting him go for free.
It’s uncertain whether the Blues would still value him at £45 million at that stage, but suitors would be hesitant to spend that knowing they could sign Gallagher for free in a year.
