Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn, who joined the Dutch club from Tottenham, insists Brighton were not worth their win or particularly dangerous in their Europa League clash.
The forward spoke to Algemeen Dagblad following the Dutch giants’ latest defeat of the season at the hands of Roberto de Zerbi‘s side.
Brighton won 2-0 in Group B on Thursday, with goals from Ansu Fati and Simon Adingra securing all three points and making Ajax‘s night even worse.
The game was much more even than their previous meeting earlier this season, with both sides sharing the same number of shots and shots on goal, and Ajax even slightly winning possession.
That wasn’t enough, as Brighton’s quality eventually showed, and Adingra added a second goal to Fati’s 15th-minute strike.
It was another demonstration of their ability to score goals against any opponent, though it appears Bergwijn was unimpressed.
“Those two moments were decisive,” he went on to say.
“I don’t think Brighton was particularly dangerous, and we deserved to score.” The group has a good vibe going on. The trainer creates a pleasant environment. Recent matches demonstrate this. Only this time, we are unable to convert it into a result.
“I always dream of hibernating in the Europa League.” We keep hoping as long as we can still play for something.”
Bergwijn is under a lot of pressure right now, and has been since he joined Spurs. Because Ajax paid a relatively high fee to Tottenham, a leadership role was expected from the start.
