Sam Byram believes he has “regrets” over leaving Leeds United in January 2016, that he would have stayed if he had known the Whites would be promoted under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020.
Byram has returned to Leeds United after re-joined the club in the summer, seven and a half years after leaving in January 2016. Byram left the club to join West Ham, but he was injured.
Only 98 appearances passed between the time Byram left and the time he returned – over periods with West Ham, Norwich and Nottingham Forest. Since then, he has been the first choice at Elland Road.
After first joining Leeds in the summer to train with the team and reunite with Daniel Farke, he was invited to play in pre-season games before eventually signing a one-year contract with the club.
He has carved out a role for himself at left-back, shining on the left side of the defence. In an interview with The Athletic, Byram was asked about his departure, and he stated that in retrospect, he would never have left Leeds.
“In retrospect, if I’d known the club would achieve promotion (in 2020) — to be able to play in the Premier League with Leeds — I’d like to say I’d have turned down the move.”
“You just never know what the future holds.” You must base your conclusion on the facts. There are regrets, such as missing out on promotion with Leeds. I feel like this is a second chance to do so.”
Sam Byram has expressed sorrow over leaving Leeds United in January 2016.
With Leeds suffering in the Championship season after season and the club’s structure a joke, there was an air of inevitability that our greatest players would eventually leave the club.
That was the situation for Byram, who claims Massimo Cellino offered him a new contract on “much worse” conditions. Would Byram have made his debut for Bielsa? Nobody knows. But it’s wonderful to have him back.
