Tottenham are still working on a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this month, sources have told Football Insider.
It is believed that Spurs have been in “daily dialogue” over a potential Gallagher transfer and the Blues would be willing to sell if their £45-50million valuation is met. Spurs are eager to add another marquee signing to the recent captures of centre-back Radu Dragusin, who joined permanently from Genoa, and forward Timo Werner, who has signed initially on loan from RB Leipzig.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side need big-money sales to raise funds for their own transfer targets due to the Financial Fair Play issues caused by their recent heavy spending.
Gallagher came through the ranks at Cobham, meaning any sale would be pure profit for Chelsea. One major issue is whether Tottenham and the west Londoners are willing to do business given their fierce rivalry and the scarcity of transfer activity between them. The former Crystal Palace and West Brom loanee has been a key player at Stamford Bridge this season, notching four assists, and has started all but one Premier League game this season. He has captained his side on 14 occasions in all competitions this season in the absence of Reece James, who is expected back in March following hamstring surgery.
Ange Postecoglou is eager for midfield reinforcements and as revealed by Football Insider (9 January), this position is a priority area for him if Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leaves the club this month. Tottenham sit fifth in the Premier League after their 3-1 home with over Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve and next face Man United at Old Trafford on Sunday (14 January). Chelsea’s back-to-back league wins have helped them to 10th place ahead of their West London derby against Fulham on Saturday afternoon (13 January).
