Tottenham News has learned that Atletico Madrid may attempt to sign Spurs defender Cristian Romero this summer.
Romero moved to North London from Serie A club Atalanta for £42 million two and a half years ago (Sky Sports News, 7 August 2021).
So far, the central defense has lived up to his price tag, appearing in 79 games for Tottenham, scoring four goals and assisting one.
He has been an important player for Ange Postecoglou this season, starting every Premier League games he has been fit for and scored three goals.
His impressive form has piqued the interest of some of Europe’s finest, and a recruitment source with close ties to Spurs has told Tottenham News that Atletico Madrid may make an offer for the 25-year-old this summer and is keeping an eye on his status.
According to Tottenham News, the Argentinian link between head coach Diego Simeone and Romero may make the move interesting to both sides.
Romero has had significant success with the Argentina national team, including a key role in their World Cup victory in Qatar in December 2022. Furthermore, he played an important role in the team’s Copa America victory the previous year.
The defender is under contract with Tottenham until June 2027, and chairman Daniel Levy is likely to demand a high amount if a trade occurs.
As he rebuilds the backline at Hotspur Way, Postecoglou will be anxious to keep Romero.
Spurs just announced the signing of Genoa centre-back Radu Dragusin for a fee that could grow to £25.7 million (Fabrizio Romano, January 11).
