Colin Calderwood has been named as Colin Calderwood new first-team coach.

The 58-year-old former Scotland international joins Russell Martin‘s backroom staff after serving as assistant manager at League Two Northampton Town.

Calderwood, a former centre-back, has over 40 years of professional football experience. He began his career at Mansfield Town before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

He also made over 400 Football League appearances for Swindon Town, Nottingham Forest, and Notts County, as well as 36 caps for Scotland.

“We are delighted that Colin has agreed to join us and further strengthen Russell‘s backroom team,” said Southampton Director of Football Jason Wilcox.

“He has a wealth of experience from his many years as a coach and manager that we know will be invaluable to our squad.”

Calderwood‘s managerial career began in 2003 with Northampton Town, where he led the club to League One promotion. Another promotion, this time to the Championship with Nottingham Forest in 2008, saw him finish second in League One.

Following managerial stints at Hibernian and Cambridge United, Calderwood gained experience as part of a backroom team, working as an assistant manager at Birmingham, Brighton, Aston Villa, and Blackpool before returning to Northampton for a third time in June 2021.
