Sporting director admits Leeds United target will leave on free transfer and wants to travel abroad.

The sports director of one of Europe’s greatest clubs has announced that one of his players will go for free this summer, just after Leeds United were connected with a move.

Leeds are anticipated to be active in the transfer market this summer, as Daniel Farke seeks to bolster his team. The type of player Leeds sign will be influenced by Sunday’s result and if the club is promoted.

If Leeds do make an immediate return to the Premier League with a win over Southampton on Sunday at Wembley, the club is allegedly looking to recruit Germany defender Marius Wolf.

The 28-year-old is nearing the end of his contract and is expected to join the Dortmund bench on June 1, when they face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

A game is also scheduled to be played at Wembley. Wolf is set to leave Dortmund on free, according to Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl, who confirmed the news to Ruhr Nachrichten.

Sebastian Kehl confirmed that Leeds target Marius Wolf will go.

Wolf was reported earlier this week to be a target for Farke’s team if the Yorkshire club is promoted back to the Premier League on Sunday afternoon at Wembley.

Wolf, unlike Brazil veteran Cafu, has played 31 games for Dortmund this season, including six of their 12 Champions League games. However, Wolf has only started twice in his six outings.

Dortmund will not offer him a new agreement as his six-year term expires, according to Kehl: “We have informed Mateu [Morey] and Marius that we will not be extending their contracts.”

“Marius went through numerous phases and earned five international appearances as a BVB professional. “He is also interested in the possibility of gaining new experience abroad,” Kehl said of Wolf.

Why Dortmund has decided not to renew Wolf’s contract

So Wolf is offered for free and is popular at clubs throughout Europe and Saudi Arabia. But for a player who is only 28, and has played 31 games this season, it seems surprising that he is departing.

However, it is alleged that Dortmund do not believe Wolf is worth his big weekly salary of £98,000, thus the German club has decided to move the defender rather than try to keep him.

If Leeds do make a move for Wolf, they must be willing to pay a high wage, and the defender must accept a large pay drop in order for Leeds to have a chance of acquiring him.
