There has been communication prior to January.
According to sources, Tottenham has begun preliminary talks with one major club about potentially signing a “very quick” player in January.
Spurs’ triple January transfer strategy under Postecoglou
According to reports in the English press, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou wants to bring in three new players next month to shore up crucial sections of the squad.
The Australian, who has led Tottenham to a fantastic start to the season after signing from Celtic, is looking for a new centre-back, midfielder, and forward (The Daily Mail).
Spurs‘ actual lack of depth in central defence has been underscored by Micky Van de ven‘s recent hamstring injury, while Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr will leave Postecoglou short in midfield when they embark for AFCON soon.
Son Heung-min will also travel to South Korea to compete in the Asia Cup, leaving Tottenham without their arguably top player this season. A slew of players are currently undergoing treatment, so January signings appear to be a necessity rather than a luxury.
In terms of new forwards, the Lilywhites are said to be interested in Al-Ittihad winger Jota, whom Postecoglou is familiar with from his time at Celtic. Meanwhile, Juventus starlet Samuel Iling-Junior has been connected numerous times. This season, the 20-year-old has played just 131 minutes in Serie A for Massimiliano Allegri, having played just 131 minutes in 2023/2024.
Tottenham have begun preliminary talks with Iling-Junior.
TUTTOmercatoWEB, an Italian news outlet, claims Tottenham have “started initial contacts” about signing Iling-Junior in January. The north Londoners are joined by Aston Villa and Brighton in making the same move, and while no official offer has been made, it looks that negotiations have commenced as the window closes.
Iling-Junior, who is thought to be worth roughly £15.5 million, would be a cheap and promising alternative to improve Postecoglou‘s offensive options. Juventus and Tottenham have a long history of working together, with both Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur rising to prominence.
While Iling-Junior isn’t a regular under Allegri, journalist Michele Neri previously told TNT Sports that the winger is well-liked in Turin.

“Iling Junior is a very quick player, who loves to take on opposing full-backs and attack the vertical spaces, in a very direct way,” Neri went on to say. “He is a left winger who can also play right wing if necessary.” He possesses a terrific dribbling awareness and quickness from a standing start that other Juventus players lack.
“You can definitely see shades of Rafael Leao when the AC Milan superstar was younger in these qualities.” The fans adored him following the Benfica game, in which he played 20 minutes and shined, assisting Milik.”
