Tottenham Hotspur are said to believe that teenage defender Alfie Dorrington can break into the first squad in the near future.
Tottenham’s academy has produced excellent players in the past, like Ledley King and Harry Kane. Oliver Skipp, who is currently in the first-team squad, is also a prime illustration of such pipeline.
Spurs’ first team is now unbeaten in the league, thanks to Ange Postecoglou’s leadership. To put it simply, the Australian is pleased with his team.
However, the squad appears to be woefully thin in the heart of defence, and an injury to either Micky van de Ven or Cristian Romero might be disastrous given the lack of cover.
Fortunately, Spurs have a few of promising youngsters in their youth ranks who could make the move up this season if necessary.
Is Alfie Dorrington ready for the first team?
Ashley Phillips and Alfie Dorrington have built a solid combination in a short period of time, with the latter receiving high acclaim in a recent Football.London piece.
Apparently, there is “a lot of belief” among Spurs’ coaching staff that Dorrington can take the Lilywhites all the way to the top, and he was thought to be “pushing for a first-team squad role” under Postecoglou.
The addition of his teammate, Phillips, appears to have formed a “roadblock” in Dorrington’s journey to the first team. While the pair is playing well together, Phillips’ considerable experience is thought to give him the advantage.
Despite recently been named to the first team’s substitution bench, Dorrington has “only continued to improve” and is now “one of the stars” in the U21 side.
With Dorrington having “such a high ceiling” and Tottenham being short on numbers in the centre of defence, the 18-year-old might be “suddenly elevated” into the first-team squad as well.
Spurs Web Opinion
We are really lucky to have not one, but two dynamic young centre-backs vying for a spot in the first-team squad. However, I do not feel there has to be a battle between the two, and both Dorrington and Phillips may have opportunities to break into Postecoglou’s plans.
