Spurs need to finally cut “incredible” Poch failure; which is nine times less valuable than Maddison.

The “huge talent” has had a tumultuous five years at N17.

Tottenham Hotspur have had mixed results with transfers over the previous five years or so.

Daniel Levy and his team have occasionally gotten it right, like with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Destiny Udogie, but there have also been some major mistakes, such as Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, and Emmerson Royal, to name a few.

Ryan Sessegnon, on the other hand, is frequently forgotten.

The Englishman, who was signed by Mauricio Pochettino, has seen his value collapse and is now nine times less valuable than summer signing James Maddison.

Ryan Sessegnon’s Spurs Career

Pochettino’s Lilywhites paid around £25 million to sign the “incredible” Sessegnon, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, from Fulham in the summer of 2019, after the then-19-year-old had an impressive season for the West Londoners, scoring two goals and providing six assists in 35 Premier League games.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, his first year in north London was disastrous. He appeared in only 12 games this season, scoring one goal and adding one assist, and missing 33 games due to a hamstring injury.

The following year was a little better on the injury front, with only nine games missing, and a loan move to Bundesliga club Hoffenheim saw him make 29 first-team appearances, scoring twice and providing five assists.

However, just as things appeared to be improving, the England U21 international suffered yet another injury.

Over the next three seasons, these issues would cause him to miss 92 games, limiting him to 45 primarily substitute appearances.

Ultimately, while the 23-year-old was previously hailed a “huge talent” by former teammate Stefan Johansen, half a decade of consistent injury problems and limited game time has severely harmed Sessegnon’s career and value.

Sessegnon’s worth by 2024

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Sessegnon is currently worth around €5 million, which equates to about £4 million, or £21 million less than the amount Spurs paid Fulham for the full-back nearly five years ago.

This revised valuation puts the Roehampton-born ace, who could be allowed to depart for free this summer, as Tottenham’s least valuable full-back, with Emerson Royal coming in slightly ahead of him at €20 million – £17 million.

Another player worth far more is summer signing Maddison, whom the CIES price at €40 million, or £34 million, which works out to be just under 9 times more than the former Fulham man.

However, it should not come as a huge surprise given that the 27-year-old has had a pretty good debut year in N17, scoring four goals and assisting eight times in 29 games and winning the Premier League Player of the Month title in August.

Finally, while he’s been extremely unlucky with injuries and hasn’t had the opportunity to develop, it’s probably time for Spurs to move on from Sessegnon this summer, as there is little to no evidence that he’ll be a useful squad player next year, and his £55k-per-week wages could be better spent elsewhere.
