Despite their need for a new striker, Spurs have refuted claims that they are interested in a forward who was once characterised as “unplayable.”
According to trades specialist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur are “denying” rumours linking the club to one of the Premier League’s most prolific goal scorers, who was once described as “unplayable” for his performances in England.
What is the most recent Tottenham Hotspur news?
This summer has been a whirlwind for the Lilywhites, with the club undergoing what appears to be a full revamp on the playing front.
Ange Postecoglou, a new flamboyant manager, arrived first, although he has yet to be challenged at the greatest level, having refined his skills in Australia, Japan, and Scotland.
Then came a slew of new additions, all aimed at either improving the first-team directly, as in the cases of James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario, or improving the squad’s overall depth, as in the case of Manor Solomon.
The loss of club star and all-time leading striker Harry Kane, however, is without a doubt the most important alteration in the team.
The England captain ultimately departed the club earlier this week after a deal worth an initial £100 million was completed with Bayern Munich, and despite the money helping to ease the sting, the Lilywhites are now without a trustworthy number nine to take his place after Richalison‘s dismal showing last season.
It’s not unexpected, then, that speculations linking the club to Chelsea‘s wanted striker Romelu Lukaku have begun to circulate, nearly combining two and two to address two problems with one transfer.
According to transfers specialist Fabrizio Romano, the club has since refuted any possibility of the Belgium international moving to north London this summer.
On his YouTube channel, he clarified the situation, saying:
“A Chelsea player who is no longer part of the project, Romelu Lukaku, who had some Tottenham rumours coming from Italy tonight.” Many Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea fans asked me if that was real.
“From what I’m hearing at the moment, Tottenham are denying this possibility of Romelu Lukaku then we never know in the market for sure the Lukaku situation is complicated he’s not part of Chelsea’s plans and he’s on the market but there are no concrete bids.”
Romelu Lukaku has how many Premier League goals?
With the way Juventus fans protested his entrance and Blues fans’ willingness to get rid of him, you’d be forgiven for assuming Lukaku would have a poor goalscoring record in England, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
He has struggled at times in the Premier League, particularly in the latter half of his Manchester United tenure. Still, it was his own stupid decision that ended his stay in West London, as there was no turning back after his interview with Sky Italia.
Only 19 players in the Premier League have scored more goals than him since his breakthrough season with West Bromwich Albion all those years ago.
In 278 league appearances in England, he has scored 121 goals and created 43 assists, giving him a goal involvement rate of 1.7 games – a truly excellent return.
And there were flashes of brilliance during his time with the Blues, with Arsenal great Sol Campbell hailing the striker as “unplayable” and “incredible” for the manner he tore apart the Gunners’ defence upon his return in the summer of 2021.
So, while the £325,000-a-week man may not be what Spurs or Postecoglou require in this new, fast-paced, and ultra-attacking project that they’re attempting to establish in N17, people should remember that, despite his recent failings, Lukaku was once one of the league’s most potent goal scorers.
