Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a late bid for Chelsea midfielder, according to The Times.
Who will the Spurs bring in?
The north Londoners have made a few key signings so far and could make more as the 11pm Friday deadline approaches.
Indeed, Spurs are rumoured to be looking for a new forward to replace the departing Harry Kane, who signed a multi-million pound deal with Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
Brennan Johnson of Nottingham Forest has been widely connected, as has Ansu Fati before his surprising loan move to league rivals Brighton.
Ange Postecoglou has so far brought in goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, and striker Alejo Veliz.
More signings, though, may be contingent on the club completing more exits before the deadline, as Postecoglou stated to the media earlier this month.
“The reality is that we can’t just keep acquiring players,” stated Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
“We already have an overabundance of players. It has an impact on training and the players themselves since everyone wants to participate and be included.
“It’s not so much that one has to happen for the other, but our current focus is trimming the squad and seeing where that takes us in terms of reinforcements.” We’re evaluating it on a daily basis. There are two weeks left in the timeframe, and I’m confident you’ll see some movement.”
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is apparently being pursued by Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, might be one to make way, according to The Times, and Spurs have lined up a prospective replacement.
According to the publication and reliable reporter Gary Jacob, Tottenham are likely to increase their interest in Chelsea‘s Gallagher if they can get rid of Hojbjerg.
“Spurs are also likely to step up their interest in Conor Gallagher, the Chelsea midfielder, if they can sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg amid interest from Manchester United,” Jacob wrote.
“Spurs were interested in signing Gallagher, 23, earlier this summer, and he has since been made available after falling down the pecking order at Chelsea.”
How talented is Conor Gallagher?
Gallagher excelled on loan at Crystal Palace during the 2021/2022 season, ranking as the club’s best performer per 90 minutes and contributing eight goals and three assists (WhoScored).
Former Tottenham Hotspur great Jermaine Jenas compared the 23-year-old to Chelsea veteran Frank Lampard in an interview with Match of the Day (via The Sun).
“He reminds me a lot of Lampard,” Jenas stated.
“I believe Conor Gallagher is a game changer as well.” He’s the type of player you bring on because he makes a difference in the game.
“He presses, gets himself into the box, and creates opportunities.” He’s also a World Cup winner. He was a member of the U17 World Cup-winning team, so he understands tournament football, and I’m happy for Conor.”
Gallagher could be a potential option for Postecoglou if he wants to add more attacking flair to his already-fluid Spurs squad.
