Striker with 85 Premier League goals confesses he passed down the chance to join Spurs

Gabby Agbonlahor has stated that he had the opportunity to join Tottenham Hotspur during the pinnacle of his career but chose to stay at Aston Villa instead

Villa last finished in or around the top four during the Martin O’Niel era about a decade and a half ago, with Agbonlahor playing an important role in that team.

The Englishman forged an impressive strike partnership with John Carew and then Emile Heskey, and he was widely regarded as one of the finest attackers in the Premier League at the time, frightening defences with his searing pace.

However, Agbonlahor‘s performances dipped after 2010, and he ultimately failed to live up to the early potential he showed, finishing with 85 Premier League goals in 371 appearances before Villa’s relegation in 2016.

Gabby Agbonlahor may have joined Spurs.

The 37-year-old has stated that Harry Redknapp expressed interest in luring him to White Hart Lane, but he refused to leave his boyhood club.

When asked if he ever had the option to leave Villa Park, the analyst told talkSPORT: “There was a possibility to join Tottenham. That was one. Harry Redknapp was involved.

“I saw Jamie O’Hara’s white bed linen and decided I couldn’t be around these big-time Charlies,” he laughed. I felt homesick leaving Birmingham, let alone Aston Villa, therefore it was not in my best interests to leave.”

Tottenham definitely lucked out because Agbonlahor’s performance plummeted after 2010 and he was plagued by injuries.

Furthermore, Spurs received a lot of value from players such as Roman Pavlyuchenco, Peter Crouch, and Emanuel Adebayor, whom they signed instead during the next few years.
