Kalvin Phillips sends message to Archie Gray after Leeds United’s victory over Leicester City.

Gray scored his first senior goal for the club in Friday’s (February 23) thrilling win over the Championship leaders at Elland Road. It was first ruled an own goal after a strong deflection off Leicester defender Wout Faes, but Gray quickly claimed it. The 17-year-old shared an image of himself celebrating on his own Instagram account [24 February]  with the caption:  “9 wins in a row! Great way to achieve my first goal! “We keep moving.“ Phillips, a former Leeds player who is presently on loan at West Ham from Manchester City, responded:  “Wonderboy!!!” Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a return to Leeds United. Leeds United certainly still has Phillips’ heart, and  most likely will always do. That makes speculation of a possible  reunion if the Whites move up this season seem pretty plausible. Leicester City lost to’mentally better’ Leeds United, and Enzo Maresca regrets making the same mistake again.

Leicester City succumbed to the Elland Road atmosphere in their defeat to Leeds United, but Enzo Maresca is pleased with his team’s performance. City lost the top-of-the-table encounter after surrendering three goals in the final ten minutes, denting their  promotion hopes. They had been the better team up to that point and had wasted several excellent opportunities to put the game away, with Maresca blaming poor finishing for the second game in a row after missing chances against Middlesbrough the previous weekend. However, after Connor Roberts equalised for Leeds, the Elland Road supporters rallied behind their team, and  Maresca confessed the hosts were “mentally better” than his side. Leeds applied the pressure and earned three points thanks to Archie Gray’s deflected attempt and a Dan James free  kick “Until the goal we conceded, for 80 minutes we were in control of the game,” “We dominated the game.”We created numerous opportunities.Football is about taking chances. We missed.“In the final 10 minutes, in this type of stadium, when you surrender a goal, you sink a little bit, or they are mentally stronger than us.After we conceded the goal, they had a better mentality than we had. “It is apparent that for 80 minutes, we dominated the game, controlled it, and generated numerous opportunities. This type of game is difficult. We feel horrible because we lose points, but I’m really satisfied since we came here  with attitude and played the way we ought to play” It is not the first time City has dropped points late in a game. They also conceded equalisers as the game ended against Ipswich, another promotion rival. City were strong at the finish of games early in the season, but conceding late has become a trend that Maresca can’t pinpoint. “We also scored many goals at the end,” he went on to say. “It is football. Leeds United: David James wants Archie Gray to join Liverpool in a’smart’ transfer conclusion.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper argued that Gray’s frequent appearances for Leeds had prepared him for the transition to Anfield, where he would face the expectations and pressure of playing for a large club. James also stated that, despite his age, Liverpool’s track record of giving young talent opportunities implies the 17-year-old may make an immediate impact on the club. Speaking to GGRecon [22 February], James said:  “For a young player to be able to demonstrate the ability and consistency required to remain in that team is  impressive. “To be fair, Leeds are a large team, and the expectation in Leeds, particularly in the Championship, is that they should be in the Premier League instead. “So, in many respects, he’s learning what it’s like to play for Liverpool because the expectations are the same, albeit on a different level. “Would it be better for him in the long run to continue with Leeds United next season? I am not sure. Over the last few years, a lot of young Liverpool players have been given opportunities to play under Jürgen Klopp. “Archie is still so young, so it could be a smart signing for Liverpool in the long run and it could be a good opportunity for the player himself.” Will Archie Gray leave Leeds United for Liverpool? Gray, who is only 17 years old, has been practically ever-present in Daniel Farke’s side, appearing in 31 of Leeds’  33  Championship games this season. Gray had previously been linked with both Liverpool and Crystal Palace, but he signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract with Leeds in January. Signing the new long-term contract demonstrated his dedication to the club where both his father and grandfather  played, which will undoubtedly influence his decision-making. However, if the club fails to advance in the close race for automatic promotion this season, interest from clubs such  as Liverpool may be tough to deny. Ipswich star reveals why Leicester City has an edge over Leeds United.

Leeds have beaten Ipswich twice this season, scoring eight goals, while Leicester have only drawn with the Tractor Boys, but Conor Chaplin believes Enzo Maresca’s men are the better side. Leicester City have an advantage over Leeds United as the top team in the Championship because they make opponents feel inferior, according to Ipswich Town’s Conor Chaplin. This season, City was unable to defeat the Tractor Boys, with both games finishing in 1-1 draws, with Ipswich scoring  late. Meanwhile, Leeds have beaten Ipswich twice, first 4-3 in August and then 4-0 in December. Despite the results, offensive midfielder Chaplin believes City are the superior team because of how they make you feel during games. Leicester and Leeds face off at Elland Road on Friday night, with nine points separating  them at the top of the division. Chaplin told Talksport:  “It probably sounds foolish given we were hammered at Leeds and drew twice with Leicester, but I think Leicester [are superior] in terms of how they make you feel on the pitch. “Possession makes you feel inferior without the ball, therefore Leicester is probably the cause. But we’ve lost twice to Leeds, and we failed to put a glove on them in the second game. “They’re both really good teams, with really good players, but Leicester with their style of play make you feel very inferior.” Ipswich may be hoping City beats Leeds on Friday (8 p.m. kickoff). If they merely get a draw, the Tractor Boys  can  return  to the top two with a victory over Birmingham on Saturday.

Diego Llorente, who was loaned to AS Roma for a second time by Leeds United in the summer, is vying for a permanent move away from Elland Road. The centre-back experienced a lot of delight under José Mourinho, who was the one who wanted him in the first place, and is hoping to do the same with Daniele De Rossi now in charge.   An item on Tuesday stated that the Serie A club was considering making the move permanent in order to profit from the Leeds player, and while Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday did not go as far, they did insinuate that a transfer was on the cards.   Everything depends on if Llorente can convince his new management, and he will have a ‘vital chance’ to do so in the Europa League on Thursday, when he will start against Feyenoord. Gazzetta dello Sport believes he faces a ‘uphill’ battle to stay, but some strong performances could help him persuade his club and De Rossi to’redeem him’ from Leeds. According to the Italian daily, it could all come down to narrow margins, and it may only take ‘one match, maybe even two’ to get what he wants, with a 50% probability of playing for AS Roma next season.

Junior Firpo has been speaking ahead of Leeds United’s important game against Leicester City at Elland Road on Friday. The Whites enter the game second in the Championship but nine points behind their opponents, knowing that a tenth consecutive victory might throw the race for first place wide open. It is undoubtedly the biggest game of the season so far, and Leicester defender Wout Faes expects a ‘great’ contest, especially following their defeat to Middlesbrough last time out. Friday nights under the lights at Elland Road frequently bring out the best in the Leeds crowd, and in an interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post, Firpo was questioned about the atmosphere he anticipates. I expect us to have a great Elland Road, but they will have a difficult time. Definitely, it will make a difference.” There is still a long way to go in the promotion race after this weekend, but another win would give Leeds a huge boost heading into the rest of the season. Leeds are unbeaten at home this season, and they will aim to capitalise when the league leaders visit West Yorkshire this weekend.
