After a nine-day hiatus, Leeds United won 4-3 against Middlesbrough two nights ago to resume their season.
After a run of just five points in as many games since the return from the international break, Leeds could not have come at a better time for the prolonged period of rest and recuperation.
After a thrilling match, Leeds knew that three points would be enough at the Riverside, as Leicester City was defeating West Brom and Ipswich Town was not playing.
Following a period of relative inactivity for Leeds’ offensive players, goals from Crysencio Summerville (2), Patrick Bamford, and Willy Gnonto were all recorded. The timing of their comeback could not have been more ideal.
Nonetheless, Daniel Farke may be concerned about what transpired at the other end, where Illan Meslier produced a rather ineffective display between the sticks.
BBC analyst Jon Newsome is furious over Leeds’ treatment by the EFL this week.
Leeds was originally supposed to have six days off between the two games, but Sky Sports has decided to broadcast both, cutting that time in half.
That kind of recovery period is not optimal at this time of year, when bumps, bruises, and knocks are common. Leeds does, however, have the advantage of being able to exert pressure on those nearby.
Pundit Jon Newsome, however, said on BBC Radio Leeds’ post-match broadcast on Monday that he finds it “disgusting” that Farke’s team plays so close to one other.
“It’s difficult, as we said before the game, sometimes as a manager you’re damned if you, damned if you don’t [make changes],” he remarked. Really, he would be at fault once more if he hadn’t changed and someone was hurt?
“Since it’s preservation, I can understand it. We all know that he has one eye on Friday; Leeds supporters were chanting it. It is truly horrible that we are playing on both Monday and Friday. While everyone else is playing on a Saturday-Sunday schedule, we have a tremendous turnaround with games away to Boro and London. tonnes of travel only for the purpose of having it air on TV. wretched
Dan James might not travel with Leeds to QPR.
Dan James ended up sustaining an injury against Boro that might have terminated his season, despite only entering the game as a substitute in the last ten minutes. The 26-year-old could hardly move during stoppage time, holding his ribs and core area, even though Leeds would not have had time to check him.
Given the quick turnaround and the fact that Leeds are already missing Connor Roberts for Friday’s game, James won’t have much time to try to heal in order to be available. After the game, Farke sounded somewhat pessimistic.
“Not so much Joe Rodon, just a hit on his calf,” he remarked. Daniel James should be more concerned as it may affect his core muscle. If there is a serious injury, bad news.
