Former Rangers defender Graham Roberts isn’t persuaded Philippe Clement is the appropriate man to lead the club back to the top.
Graham Roberts has expressed sympathy for Rangers manager Philippe Clement, but doubts his ability to restore the club’s past grandeur.
Despite calls for his dismissal following poor performances against Aberdeen and Dundee United, Clement has led Rangers to four consecutive victories in all competitions, closing the gap on second-placed Aberdeen to two points and bolstering their Europa League chances.
With a critical encounter against Postecoglou’s Tottenham at Ibrox and the Scottish League Cup final against arch-rivals Celtic on the horizon, Roberts, a former Rangers champion, is skeptical of Clement’s ability to return the club to Scotland’s pinnacle.
Speaking with Simon Jordan on talkSPORT, Roberts admitted: “I am not. I believe he had to learn the hard way. To be honest, the club has not given him much money to spend, and he is struggling.
“I believe Celtic generated a £60 million profit last year, and Rangers are nowhere near that. If they do not win the league in the next five or six years, they will fall well behind Celtic, which is his concern.
“If it had been four weeks ago, I would have said Tottenham would win because Rangers looked ordinary. But they’ve picked up. I’m going to sit on the fence and go with 1-1.
“They started slowly, but with the players he has, they’ve improved over the last four or five games, scoring 14 goals and conceding one. He has got the nucleus correct. But I’m not sure he’s the man for the Rangers right now.”
However, Roberts has taken a more hopeful position, putting his weight behind the Gers to win tonight’s encounter.
Reflecting on his own experience before joining Rangers, where he won two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup with Spurs, he believes Postecoglou’s tough injury roster gives the Light Blues a good chance of a draw.
