As the team looks to make an impact during the summer transfer window, we look at what our Tottenham reporters would do with each of the full-backs in Ange Postecoglou’s roster.
Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou will need to make some important decisions as they organise their preparations for the 2024–2025 season and beyond. Spurs have improved this season under the Australian, and if they have another productive summer transfer window, they might very well keep moving up the league standings.
As part of the adjustments, north London needs to restructure its roster, and some players may go for new opportunities elsewhere. Given that two of the Lilywhites’ current seven options in that area of the ground are on loan from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there might be a lot of movement among the full-backs.
What precisely does the future hold for athletes like Ryan Sessegnon, Djed Spence, and Sergio Reguilon? Below, Tottenham reporters Rob Guest and Alasdair Gold offer their assessments of the full-backs.
Pedro Porro
Gold: The Spanish player has performed admirably so far this season, and as he grows under Postecoglou, there is still plenty more to come from him. a straightforward one to get going. Continue
Guest: When Porro is involved in what Postecoglou is attempting to construct in north London, it’s an extremely simple choice. Hopefully, the Spaniard will continue to perform well for the Spurs club in the upcoming season as he has done this year. Continue
Emerson Royal
Gold: This is a difficult one because Emerson enjoys his time at Spurs and Postecoglou is adamant about being the top trainer in the team. Every time he steps onto the pitch, he gives it his best for the team. But he simply doesn’t fit the Australian system, and this time around, another big from Saudi Arabia might prove to be too alluring for everyone as they need to clear out slots for foreign players. SELL
Guest: In the summer, Tottenham might be persuaded to sell Emerson if Saudi Arabia makes another offer after Al Nassr‘s unsuccessful January attempt. Even if the player is well-liked at the squad and always gives it his all when wearing a Tottenham shirt, you can still see when he starts in place of Porro that he is not a direct substitute for the veteran.
Spurs‘ best bet, assuming the price is right, might be to let Emerson go this summer in order to bring in a Porro substitute. SELL
Djed Spence
Gold: This one is simpler since Postecoglou has already made it clear that he does not consider Spence to be a member of his team moving forward. The teenage full-back was sent to train with the Under-21s after his loan from Leeds failed in the summer. Though it may wind up being another loan, his time in Genoa should have helped Spurs secure a contract for him this summer. SELL IF NOT LOAN
Guest: Spence’s move to Tottenham hasn’t gone as planned, and he will have a pivotal summer in his nascent career. Currently on loan at Genoa, the Italian team is rumoured to have a clause in the loan agreement allowing them to purchase the player for £8.5 million at the end of the season.
Tottenham must let go of Spence permanently, whether or not they sign him, as it’s probably best for both sides to part ways and he’s obviously not in Postecoglou’s plans. SELL
Destiny Udogie
Gold: The Italian’s fantastic debut season in the Premier League came to an early end, but he is here to stay after agreeing to a lucrative new contract during the campaign. Continue
Guest:Sadly, Udogie‘s injury will keep him out of action for the remainder of the season. Similar to Porro, the player will play a significant part in Postecoglou’s Tottenham squad in the upcoming season. Continue
Ben Davies
Gold: This season, Davies has been there for Spurs when they have needed him, and Postecoglou has benefited greatly from his adaptability. His experience, native status, and versatility as a fill-in at a few positions might be valuable in a season with more games. At this point in his career, the question is if the Welshman wants to go on and play more regular football somewhere else. Continue
Guest: Even though he hasn’t started as many games as he would have wanted, Davies has nevertheless performed admirably in reserve and at left back when needed. With a potential return to Europe in the upcoming campaign, Tottenham will undoubtedly require coverage, therefore it makes perfect sense to keep him on staff. Continue
Sergio Regulion
Gold: Another player not on the Postecoglou desired list, he should be able to fetch a fee from Spurs in the last year of his contract after a strong loan at Brentford. SELL
Guest:Reguilon is now having a great loan experience at Brentford, which may generate interest in him come summertime. Another player who is obviously not in Postecoglou’s long-term plans is Tottenham, who must let go of the former Real Madrid player permanently before the upcoming season as part of a team restructure. SELL
Ryan Sesegnon
Gold: Should the Spurs decide not to exercise the option in Sessegnon’s contract, the player’s injury-plagued tenure there may come to an end this summer. As with the left hamstring surgery last year, it is hoped that this one will also heal his right hamstring. However, extending his contract by one year is risky unless Tottenham can simultaneously find him a half-season loan move to evaluate him or even just increase his value for a January move for a player who cost them £30 million plus Josh Onomah five years ago. Loan
Guest: After joining Tottenham in 2019, Sessegnon moved from Fulham, but injuries have ruined his Tottenham career. It might be the ideal time for both parties to part ways because his Spurs contract expires this summer unless the team chooses to exercise the option to extend it by an additional 12 months.
