Lazio are apparently interested in signing Leeds United forward Willy Gnonto ahead of the January transfer window, but their bid is said to be a loan-to-buy.
Despite the spectacular run of the two teams above them at the moment, Daniel Farke‘s Leeds have put themselves in with a great chance of promotion this season.
When you’re in a promotion race, January can go one of two ways, and Leeds will be aware that the correct business may put them into the top two.
Willy Gnonto’s most recent news: Will he leave in January?
The newest story tying Gnonto to a transfer away comes from his own country, with Calcio Style reporting that the winger would like to leave in the new year.
Not only that, but they claim that Serie A club Lazio is interested in signing him in January but will not make a permanent offer.
Lazio is thought to be submitting a loan bid, with a €15 million (£13.1 million) option to buy inserted in the deal so that they may buy him in the summer.
There is no chance for Leeds to agrees with this.
From Leeds’ standpoint, there are two fundamentally perplexing aspects of this proposed agreement.
To begin with, if Leeds were to let the Italian leave in January, they would not do so without receiving a large chunk of money right immediately to reinvest in a suitable replacement.
Second, if they do sanction a loan-to-buy to assist Gnonto regain his form and make the Italy squad for Euro 2024, why would Leeds accept such a low buy option?
If Lazio want Gnonto after this loan, it’s apparent that he’s improved his form since the start of the season, when the Whites were turning down £25 million.
There is nothing in this offer that makes it worthwhile for Leeds to pick up the phone and call Lazio, and the fact that this is their strategy suggests they have no chance of matching what Leeds would expect.
