“This is becoming an active pursuit.” Arsenal is also watching Leeds’ £5.5 million target

Josh Doig was widely linked with a move to Leeds United during the January transfer window, and a deal could yet happen after a move to Marseille fell through – and Arsenal are now interested.

Josh Doig

According to a claim by writer Dean Jones on Give Me Sport, Leeds want to sign the Scottish teenager, who is the latest example of a Scot impressing in Italy.

He joined Verona from Hibernian in the summer of 2022, having broken into the first team last season and contributing six goals in 22 appearances as a left back. This season, he has played 14 more games for Verona.

According to reports, Leeds, Rangers, Torino, and Monza have all expressed interest in the £5.5 million-rated left defender. Verona is willing to sell. Marseille had submitted a bid of £4.3 million and were thought to be close to completing the transfer.

But Doig played for Verona over the weekend, and Football Scotland reports that Sassuolo has made a late swoop, casting doubt on Marseille‘s proposal. It’s still unclear; Jones weighs in on the Doig race.

“He [Doig] is a target that both [Leeds and Rangers] were well aware of, and Arsenal have kept up to date on his progress over the last year or so. “He is a really good player,” Jones said.

Josh Doig

“This is becoming into an active chase of an attainable player. However, Leeds is looking for a select candidates with specialised experience and qualities. Ben Johnson is achievable and might be the one.”

Arsenal have been watching Leeds United’s target Josh Doig.

Doig appears to be staying in Europe in one way or another, with Marseille or Sassuolo – until Leeds or any other interested parties make a bid. Arsenal or Rangers, perhaps.

Is he worth the £5.5 million asking price? Without a question. He is young and proven in Serie A, so Verona’s decision to trade him for so little is surprising. Leeds have been in need of a left-back for several years.
