Daniel Farke explains why the Pascal Struijk situation arose against Preston and shares Leeds United’s ‘karma’ admission.
According to Daniel Farke, Pascal Struijk was number three on the list to step up and take Leeds United‘s penalty against Preston because Crysencio Summerville and Joel Piroe were not on the pitch.
The Whites manager told the Yorkshire Evening Post on Thursday (28 December) that it was “annoying” that the 24-year-old centre-back scored from the spot before Liam Millar scored in the 89th minute to seal a 2-1 victory for the Lilywhites.
He went on to say that conceding that goal at the end of the game was “karma” for his team not doing enough in the first half at Deepdale.
“We had Cree and Joel Piroe not on the pitch,” Farke said. “Because Pascal was number three, he accepted responsibility in a cool and calm manner.
“This is what irritates me. Because of the second half, we deserved to leave with a point and good momentum to come back, and everyone would have praised us.
“I, too, want to make an accurate assessment of this game.” We didn’t lose this game because of a blunder by Archie in the 90th minute.
“I want to focus more on our offensive performance in the first half because we should have done much better.” Yes, this is sometimes like karma; what you did in the first half comes back in the 89th minute, and we didn’t do enough.”
Need to improve
It’s encouraging to see Farke not blaming Archie Gray for Preston‘s defeat after Millar skipped past him and fired an excellent strike into the top corner to seal the three points.
It must have been extremely disappointing for him to see his team fall behind again after Struijk‘s penalty appeared to have saved what would have been a reasonable point in the circumstances.
The West Yorkshire club must now win at fifth-placed West Brom on Friday (December 29) in order to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.
