Middlesbrough has loaned out Sam Greenwood. The Leeds United star has been superb in recent weeks for Michael Carrick’s side, and it is yet another indication that the club has made a huge error.
Greenwood scored again in Saturday’s 3-3 tie with Plymouth. Not only that, but the Leeds midfielder converted a penalty for Boro. This stems from his time on the left wing under Carrick, which was a new position for him.
The dynamic forward has now scored three goals in his past five Championship appearances. In flashes, he’s delivering on the promise he hinted at on Elland Road. Greenwood is an extremely talented player.
He simply needed to go on loan and acquire some game time, which he is doing at Boro. Leeds, on the other hand, made a significant error by including a permanent clause in his loan at The Riverside.
According to the Athletic, Middlesbrough and Leeds agreed to put a £1.5 million permanent provision in his contract. In any case, it’s a steal for a man who has assisted on five Premier League goals for us.
Sam Greenwood form a further sign Leeds have made an error
But perhaps more so because of his recent performance. Greenwood is beginning to translate his promise into Championship form. Especially when Leeds are now without a no.10, his natural position.
There are two problems here. For starters, Leeds have not given themselves a chance to keep the gifted ace at Elland Road after his loan spell in the north. Second, consider the cost of the permanent clause.
At £1.5 million, it’s a steal. Greenwood is displaying the type of form that is expected of a player worth much more. So, either the clause should not have been inserted – or it should have been considerably more expensive.
