According to The Athletic, Tottenham and Everton are close to striking an agreement on altering Dele Alli’s salary structure.
The outlet stated on its website on July 12 that the two clubs were in continuous talks that would allow the Toffees to re-sign the former England star if they so desired.
After his contract at Goodison Park expired, Dele, 28, became a free agent. According to the rules of the agreement that signed him to the team, Spurs would have been entitled to a “significant fee” if he signed a new contract.
In any new contract, Tottenham is anticipated to keep a sell-on clause that would provide them a payment if Everton were to move him in the future.
The midfield player, who has played 13 games for the Toffees so far, originally joined in the January 2022 window without receiving any money up front but with £10 million owed after 20 games.
Although Dele’s difficulties have been widely reported, there has never been any question about his skill on the field when he is at his best.
He contributed to the historic comeback in the 3-2 triumph over Crystal Palace that gave Frank Lampard Premier League membership two years ago, but that game still stands as the high point of his Toffees career for the time being.
Dele’s emotional interview with Gary Neville from a year ago tomorrow [The Overlap, July 13] then made his childhood maltreatment and mental health issues clear.
In addition, he said at the time that despite not being able to play for the Toffees boss, he had a good relationship with manager Sean Dyche.
After training at Finch Farm this summer to recover from an injury, the former two-time PFA Young Player of the Year may soon be a factor on the field if a deal can be worked out with Spurs to pave the way for a return.
