Tottenham updates James Maddison has been dropped from England’s squad despite being named in Gareth Southgate’s initial group.
Tottenham have confirmed that James Maddison will not be included in England’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers due to an injury sustained against Chelsea. The 26-year-old was named to Gareth Southgate‘s squad for next week’s matches against Malta and North Macedonia.
According to a club statement, he will instead remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Spurs medical staff. Maddison was substituted just before halftime on Monday, with his team level at 1-1 in a tense London derby.
Southgate stated on Thursday that there were some concerns in the group he named, but Maddison was not specifically mentioned by the England manager. “Some of those, we could lose one today after a scan, we could lose one tomorrow,” he went on to say.
Southgate also selected Jude Bellingham, Callum Wilson, and Bukayo Saka, all of whom are questionable for the two upcoming games due to injuries. “I don’t really know [who will be available],” he added.
“You’d be surprised how difficult it is to select a squad because all clubs are obviously sensitive to information and you’re trying to piece everything together.” So I can’t be certain that everyone in that squad will be there on Sunday night [when the squad reports for duty], with varying degrees of certainty.
“With that Callum is probably the biggest level of doubt, Callum Wilson, but equally I’m pretty confident that the others can get through and they’re all keen to be in the squad so that’s a really good sign.”
Ange Postecoglou suffered two major injuries in Monday’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea, as Maddison and Micky van de Ven were both taken off before halftime. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said after the game that changes were needed at the time because his team was down to ten men, and Maddison‘s situation made things easier.
“He [Maddison] got a knock on the ankle,” Postecoglou explained. “We were already down one man. At that point, it made sense to make a few changes.”
Tottenham will be without Van de Ven against Wolves on Saturday lunchtime, though he will not require hamstring surgery, according to football.london. Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie will also miss the game due to red cards.
Spurs will be without the core of the team that led them to the top of the table after ten games, with Maddison playing a key role in that. This effectively eliminates him from the match at Molineux as well.
