Tottenham are in ‘advanced talks’ over a summer signing for the £25 million Bundesliga star.

The RB Leipzig player has pleased Ange Postecoglou ahead of the summer transfer window.

Timo Werner was moved to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on loan in January, and it appears that head coach Ange Postecoglou wants to keep him at N17 for at least another season – but not on a permanent basis.

The Spurs manager hopes to add more firepower to his forward line, and extending Werner’s loan would be a cost-effective move for the north London club. Werner, 28, has only two Premier League goals in 13 games, but he has provided a varied attacking option by playing both out wide and through the middle.

According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are currently in ‘advanced talks’ with the Bundesliga club to extend the German international’s loan term until June 2025.

On X (previously Twitter), Romano wrote: “Tottenham advance in talks to keep Timo Werner at the club for another season, extending his loan from Timo Werner.” The new loan contract would be valid from July 2024 to June 2025, with the same terms as the one agreed upon in January. Werner now expects to remain at THFC.”

Werner’s January move includes an option to buy, with a clause of about £15 million.

However, it appears that the Australian manager’s recruitment team is looking at different solutions to keep the German star at the club without having to invest the whole £15 million.

Of course, Werner’s Premier League expertise extends back further than the last six months. Following a four-year tenure with RB Leipzig, the attacker joined Chelsea in 2020, where he made 56 Premier League appearances and scored 10 goals.

He spent two years at Stamford Bridge, scoring in the club’s 5-4 Champions League quarter-final loss to Real Madrid in April 2022, before returning to Germany.

On his return to RB Leipzig, he became the first player to reach a century of goals for the club, with a brace against Bochum bringing his total to 101 goals in 169 games across all competitions.

The former VfB Stuttgart player has also made 57 international appearances, scoring 24 goals, but was ruled out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to injury. He also missed out on the proposed Euros 2024 team due to muscular issues that ended his 2023/24 domestic campaign.
