Tottenham are preparing to offload another ‘great’ player on a free transfer following the departure of Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham Hotspur would’very willingly’ allow Eric Dier to depart the club this month on a free transfer.
That’s according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, who provided an update on Tottenham‘s January transfer ambitions.
Spurs have already secured one exit in the first few days of the transfer season, with Hugo Lloris joining Los Angeles FC over the weekend.
The 37-year-old was permitted to go on a free transfer with only six months remaining on his contract, and Eric Dier is in the similar situation at Tottenham.
Dier has struggled for minutes this season, with Ange Postecoglou preferring Emerson Royal over the Englishman.
The 29-year-old has only made four appearances this season, and rumours indicate Postecoglou is keen to transfer the defender.
According to David Ornstein, the Spurs would gladly let Dier leave for free this month.
Tottenham is willing to let Dier depart for free.
Ornstein revealed on Rio Ferdinand‘s FIVE that Spurs are aiming to offload players in the coming weeks.
After enabling Lloris to transfer to the MLS for free, the journalist stated that they would be pleased to see Dier leave.
“They want players to leave,” Ornstein remarked. “Hugo Lloris is already at LAFC.” This does not generate a transfer fee, but it does remove his income from the pay tab, which is critical in this Financial Fair Play period.
“They would very gladly do the same with Eric Dier, who’s out of contract next summer and is not part of the plans.”
Dier was once a significant player at Tottenham Hotspur under Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.
This season, however, the ‘excellent’ defender has slid down the pecking order, with Postecoglou even preferring to play full-backs in central defence over the Englishman.
It’s revealing for Dier that he’s only made one start during a period in which Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have both been ruled out.
With Tottenham also close to signing Genoa center-back Radu Dragusin, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Dier go before the end of the month.
