Tottenham might sign a significant center-back from Manchester United this summer.
Alan Hutton has hinted that Tottenham Hotspur may make a surprise bid for Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite this summer. Hutton, a former Spurs right-back, revealed that his sources say the North London club is interested in signing the excellent defender.
Over the last few months, there have been reports that Everton is preparing for bids from big clubs. The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United and Tottenham are both interested in the teenage defender. However, it appears like Manchester United‘s pursuit may be fading. According to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, Everton rejected the Red Devils’ £35 million bid, plus £8 million in add-ons, prompting them to consider abandoning their pursuit.
With Manchester United obviously out of the equation, Hutton believes Tottenham may step in. In an interview with Football Insider, he stated, “I believe Tottenham have been short at times in that regard, particularly throughout the back four. When you look at their starting back line, if any of them are hurt or go missing for an extended period of time, the replacements aren’t quite up to par.”
Tottenham are preparing to ‘hijack’ Manchester United’s prized signing.
Hutton went on to highlight Branthwaite‘s potential: “To have someone in the door with that potential who might be a regular starter for England moving ahead, that could be a fantastic deal. He performed well last season, and there are rumours that Romero may be on the move, so there are a few things in the works that may lead to them signing someone like Branthwaite and filling the vacancy at center-half. People I communicate with at the club have told me there could be a hijack.
The idea of signing a young, high-potential defender like Branthwaite is undeniably enticing for Spurs fans. However, the financial component of the transaction remains a significant challenge. Tottenham’s other transfer priorities may prevent them from spending more than £50 million or £60 million on a center-back.
Despite the potential stumbling obstacles, the prospect of Branthwaite wearing a Spurs jersey next season remains interesting. His arrival might bring the defensive solidity and future promise that Tottenham requires to bolster their backline.
