Tottenham have the option of signing a cheap striker in the January transfer window to replace Harry Kane.
Tottenham will be on high alert since Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy reportedly has a £15 million release clause in his contract despite scoring 14 goals in eight Bundesliga appearances. The 27-year-old assisted the German side’s elevation to the top flight last season before extending his goal-scoring exploits by storming the top tier.
After eight games, the Guinean has surpassed Robert Lewandowski‘s record for most Bundesliga goals ever, and scouts from all over the world are taking notice. According to TEAMtalk, he has piqued the interest of Tottenham Hotspur, who are thought to be conducting preliminary investigations into the striker.
Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou chose not to enter the transfer market in search of a marquee replacement for Harry Kane. They instead put the onus on Son Heung-min and James Maddison, who will be supported by Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Brennan Johnson.
Spurs will take note that Guirassy is outscoring Kane in Germany and is available for a fraction of the fee that Spurs paid for the England captain in the summer, though Fulham are also said to be interested in a potential transfer as they seek to fill the void left by Aleksandar Mitrovic’s big-money move to Saudi Arabia.
Postecoglou has mostly utilised Son as an out-and-out striker recently, explaining that his new captain was one of the reasons he didn’t bring in an early replacement for Kane.
“One of the reasons we didn’t buy (a number nine) is that Sonny, central or wide, has all the characteristics to play in any system,” Postecoglou stated at the time. “I have a mental image of how I want the team to look, and we’re still building.” There is much work to be done.”
But, with Guirassy putting up such great goalscoring stats in the Bundesliga, Spurs may find it tough to turn down a player of his calibre for under £15 million. Alejo Veliz was signed for a comparable sum, and despite being seven years Guirassy’s junior, another central forward option may be needed.
Especially because Son has been playing with injury and was taken off again during his club’s 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday night, a game in which Postecoglou chastised the team despite winning.
If Son is unable to play the whole 90 minutes each week and the likes of Richarlison and Johnson are preferred out wide, Guirassy might be the guy to solve Postecoglou’s dilemma for a fee of £15 million.
