Tottenham correspondent provides an update on Joe Rodon’s chances of joining Leeds.

Leeds United fans have been given a tempting hint on the transfer front after a Spurs reporter revealed information on the future of certain of Tottenham’s loanees, including Joe Rodon.

Leeds United are on a high following their victory over Plymouth.
Daniel Farke’s Leeds United are fighting for an immediate return to the Premier League after being demoted last May. They are second in the Championship two-thirds of the way through the season, closing the gap on Leicester after an outstanding win at Plymouth was followed by the Foxes’ shock setback on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Southampton and Ipswich Town are just a few points behind with a game in hand on the Elland Road side. With two of these four teams set to make the play-offs and at least one guaranteed to spend another season in the Championship, it is crunch time for the Yorkshire side.

Spurs reporter offered a hint about Joe Rodon, who has swiftly become a fan-favorite at Elland Road after joining on loan from Tottenham in the summer after struggling at Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais.

Still only 26 years old, he has formed a strong partnership with Pascal Struijk, helping the Elland Road club to the best defensive record in the Championship, which has fueled their bid for an immediate return to the top flight.

With Spurs having bought three centre-backs since the appointment of new manager Ange Postecoglou last summer, the former Swansea defender’s future appears grim, and Leeds will be eager to keep him on a permanent basis.

Spurs writer John Wenham was asked about the shape of Tottenham’s future backline, particularly the destiny of fellow center-back Japhet Tanganga. “If Tanganga doesn’t play between now and the end of the season, I believe Tottenham will simply release him.” If he does play, I believe Spurs would exercise their option to extend his contract by one year before selling him for about £3 million.

“Time will tell, but I believe he will leave in the summer. As we can see, the rebuilding process is taking place and it is critical that these players leave.”

Then, as far as Leeds fans are concerned, came the all-important line about Rodon, suggesting his future lies outside of north London: “We suddenly look very strong in defence, which means that losing the likes of Tanganga and Joe Rodon would have very little impact on the first-team squad.”

Rodon, who is grouped with Tanganga, is not out of contract this summer like the Englishman, but his contract goes until 2025, making it unlikely that he will move for free. However, with no place in Postecoglou’s plans, it is difficult to imagine much of a market for the Welshman, suggesting that Leeds may find themselves at the head of the queue and able to snare a bargain.
