Wenham challenges Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer strategy following Kelly’s loss.
Tottenham Hotspur indicated interest in signing Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer this summer; however, Newcastle United won the fight for his signatures, and John Wenham, proprietor of the famous Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, has questioned the club’s decision not to pursue signings for the 25-year-old.
Wenham is astonished that the North Londoners did not increase their interest in his services and compete with the Toons for his signature.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed that former Bristol City star Kelly will move to St James Park on Thursday, writing on X: “Kelly has signed a five-year contract as a Newcastle player; deal is 100% completed.”
Free transfer fumble?
Spurs have long been interested in Lloyd Kelly, and Bournemouth rejected a £20 million deal from the Lilywhites last summer, according to The Athletic.
In an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham stated his amazement at Kelly‘s move to Newcastle and the lack of Spurs opportunities for his signings:
“Kelly is expected to join Newcastle on a free transfer. That was someone we previously bid £20 million to sign, therefore I’m shocked we’ve only watched as the transaction was completed.
“We seemingly didn’t challenge Newcastle for his signature, which is strange.”
Wenham is correct in some ways, as Spurs were willing to pay more than £20 million for his signatures less than a year ago, and when the opportunity to acquire him on a free transfer occurs, you don’t push the player enough to move to the N17. His versatility could come in helpful given the club’s lack of depth at CB and LB.
