Tottenham’s hunt for a new defender ahead of the January transfer window could take them back to defender Piero Hincapie.
Spurs are planning to spend money in January to deal with Micky van de Ven‘s injury, and Bayer Leverkusen defender Hincapie is reportedly on their list of potential acquisitions.
Tottenham has reportedly scouted Hincapie several times in the last year, according to The Mirror. The Ecuadorian defender has been one of the Bundesliga’s most consistent performances and is largely regarded as a player with a bright future.
While Tottenham are interested in Hincapie, there is a catch: Leverkusen will not be willing to sell in January.
The German club is soaring high in the Bundesliga, and a mid-season sale is not expected for Leverkusen or their manager, Xabi Alonso.
Tottenham is keeping an eye on Piero Hincapie.
Hincapie, who is still only 21, had previously been regarded as a ‘fantastic’ defender, and it wasn’t long ago that he was linked with a move to Liverpool.
Given Van de Ven’s injury, Tottenham‘s need for a new defender is evident. But even before that, Ange Postecoglou seemed to desire additional alternatives in the back.
The weekend performances of Eric Dier and Ben Davies did little to inspire Spurs fans, while Cristian Romero remains a walking red card.
Of course, obtaining Hincapie in January will be difficult. With a valuation of roughly £43 million, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Leverkusen seek even more if they were to sell.
However, if Spurs are serious about backing Ange and winning things, players like Hincapie will need to be bought.
