Latest Tottenham news ahead of the FA Cup match against Manchester City, with James Maddison’s return from injury giving Ange Postecoglou a major boost.
For the first time in nearly three months, James Maddison could return to Tottenham action. Spurs’ creative talent has been AWOL since the terrible 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, when he sustained an ankle injury in early November, bringing Ange Postecoglou’s ideal start in north London to an end.
Micky van de Ven also sustained a major injury in the London derby, and he only returned in the recent 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were also sent off in the heated clash, which resulted in the Lilywhites losing three of their following four games.
Despite recent injury concerns, Udogie and Romero are now back with the team, and Maddison’s potential return could not come at a better time. Postecoglou is already missing three vital players, with club captain Son Heung-min representing South Korea in the Asia Cup, and Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr representing Mali and Senegal, respectively, at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Giovani Lo Celso, one of Maddison’s replacements, is also out with an injury, and Dejan Kulusevski missed the four-goal thriller at Old Trafford.
The Sweden international’s absence was owing to a sickness that spread through the Tottenham camp earlier this month, and he is expected to be available for the tense FA Cup fourth round match against Manchester City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And Maddison, who has returned to full team training in preparation for the cup fixture, may be another name added to the matchday squad. Last Friday, the England international is claimed to have completed his first full practice with his teammates at Hotspur Way since November, and his comeback has piqued the interest of many Spurs supporters.
However, it should be noted that Maddison may still miss out against the FA Cup holders. Postecoglou has so far yet to announce if he will return from injury for this weekend’s game.
