Tottenham Hotspur are expected to launch a blockbuster raid on Manchester City for Jack Grealish, which could see the left winger play a new position.
After a difficult first season at Manchester City, Grealish improved last season and played a key role in Pep Guardiola’s side winning the triple, which included the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. Grealish knew he’d have greater competition for his starting berth when Jeremy Doku joined City from Rennes last summer.
Grealish has had a rough season, having to share left-wing duty with Doku. The fact that the Englishman is no longer a definite starter under Guardiola has fueled talk that he may leave.
Grealish has been linked with a shock move to Chelsea, but that seems improbable. Instead, the attacker would be better off returning to his boyhood club, Aston Villa.
Recent sources claim that Villa would ‘jump at the chance’ to rejoin with Grealish if he became available for move in the summer.
Alan Hutton, a former Villa and Tottenham right-back, has suggested that Grealish may join Ange Postecoglou’s team instead.
“I believe Grealish could play the No. 10 role at Tottenham,” Hutton stated in a recent interview.
“If [James] Maddison is unavailable or not in good form, you need a backup, and he could step in.
Surprise Jack Grealish joins Tottenham
“But, from what I understand, it all comes down to money. Manchester City paid £100 million, and I was at Villa when Daniel Levy refused to pay £20 million to sign him from the Championship.
“He’s 28, but they [City] will still charge a large cost.
“When Grealish is on form and playing at his best, he comes in and improves all sides.
“I think he may well be happy where he is for the moment.”
It would be a huge surprise if Grealish left City for Spurs. While Spurs are not currently vying for the title, City will not want to enhance a squad that may later contend with them for accolades.
Grealish is no longer worth the £100 million that City spent for him, due to his age and recent problems. However, as Hutton points out, he remains a game changer when he is totally confident, and he is also a full England international.
