Tottenham keep a close eye on Morten Hjulmand

Tottenham Hotspur have been scouting Sporting CP defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand for the ‘past few weeks’ as they plan a summer deal, according to Record, as recounted by Sports Witness.

Hjulmand has been a constant presence for the Verde e brancos this season, appearing in 35 appearances across all competitions and scoring six goals. Sporting‘s defensive structure, led by Rúben Amorim, has resulted in only 22 goals conceded in the Primeira Liga, ranking third in the competition.

Tottenham have increased their interest in the player after sending agents to observe him play at the Estádio José Alvalade during Sporting’s 2-1 victory against Benfica to evaluate potential from both teams.

Spurs were particularly interested in Hjulmand, and they sent a scout to watch his performance in the game after becoming increasingly interested in the 24-year-old in the ‘past few weeks’.

While other prospects were being evaluated, a Spurs representative returned to England with excellent news on the Denmark International.

Looking for a new midfielder?

Tottenham have already begun their search for a new defensive midfielder, with Oliver Skipp and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg expected to leave the club. The North London club has a ‘growing enthusiasm’ for Hjulmand to assist strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Although Transfermarkt values Hjulmand at £22 million, Sporting are hesitant to sell the Danish midfielder at the present and will reject any approaches for the player, whose contract expires in the summer of 2028.

While Tottenham are free-flowing in attack, the defensive end of the pitch remains problematic. They have conceded 39 goals, the most of any side in the Premier League top-six standings.

They require a player in the pattern of Hjulmand to be a massive presence in the defensive third, stopping assaults while also creating attacks via transitions, which has been a consistent feature in his Sporting performances.

With reports indicating that “movements” have already occurred, it remains to be seen how persuasive Spurs would be in acquiring the player despite Sporting’s desire to sell.
