Tottenham to obtain Lionel Messi’s consent as Daniel Levy ‘works on contract offer’

Tottenham are apparently negotiating a deal that could suit Lionel Messi.

Tottenham are apparently looking for a new contract for midfielder Giovani Lo Celso. Despite the Argentine‘s limited appearances in the Premier League this season, Ange Postecoglou hopes to persuade him that he remains a part of his long-term plans.

Lo Celso‘s current contract will expire next summer. The 28-year-old has long been linked with a departure. Barcelona and former club Real Betis are rumoured to be interested in a possible trade.

According to the Spanish daily AS, Lionel Messi recommended Lo Celso to Barcelona during the January transfer window. Messi is also known to think Lo Celso is Argentina‘s top midfielder.

And Spurs may now have the iconic forward’s permission, with negotiations for a new contract allegedly starting. According to Tutto Mercato, Spurs intend to give Lo Celso a two-year extension and may even enhance his compensation to persuade him to stay.

Lo Celso has made 17 Premier League appearances this season, with only four of them being starts. His top-flight appearances total 464 minutes, which is comparable to five full matches.

Real Betis, where Lo Celso spent two seasons before joining Spurs in 2019, were thought to be interested in a transfer last summer and renewed that interest in January. However, the former Paris Saint-Germain star decided to stay in North London.

In January, he stated that Postecoglou‘s conviction in him convinced him to stay. He insisted: “I was really grateful for his conviction in me, so I worked hard every day and demonstrated that I wanted to be here and play. I’ve been quite comfortable in training and with the manner he trains. I admire his football philosophy, which gave me hope that I would be able to join his club.

“Both the coaching staff and my teammates have been extremely helpful. It’s a personal challenge for my career, but the coach’s strategy and attitude are helping me better my game because he asks and expects me to accomplish specific things in my job.

“Things have been going well.” He’s helped me feel secure and at ease since he joined.”

Spurs are poised to be active in the summer transfer window. A new forward is likely to be sought by Postecoglou to help the North Londoners regain their place among the Premier League’s elite.
