Tottenham’s January plans have shifted as a result of recent developments.

According to Football Insider, following the injury to Micky van de Ven, Ange Postecoglou has determined that he will only allow Eric Dier to be sold if another centre-back gets through the door in January.

Micky Van de ven

While Van de Ven‘s hamstring strain is not likely to require surgery, the Dutchman is expected to be sidelined until January (The Telegraph).

That means Postecoglou will have to rely on Dier, the only other senior centre-back available to him if the Australian does not want to go with Under-21 players.

The England international’s future has recently been the subject of much conjecture, with The Mirror stating last week that Daniel Levy will seek a fee for the 29-year-old in January rather than allowing him to run out his contract and leave as a free agent next summer.

According to the report, AS Roma and Sporting Lisbon are both interested in signing the experienced defender when the transfer market opens in the middle of the season.

Spurs may be forced to sign a defender if Van de Ven is injured.

However, according to Football Insider’s most recent update, Spurs’ plans have changed as a result of Van de Ven‘s injury.

While the Lilywhites are still eager to sell Dier in January, they want to bring a defender through the door first before allowing him to leave.

This is because Posteocoglou does not want to be without choices, even if only for a short time, in case one of his starting center-backs gets injured again.

Our Opinion

Even if Van de Ven had not been injured, I do not believe Tottenham would have let Dier depart without replacing him.

In fact, if the England international leaves in January, Spurs may need to buy two centre defenders, unless Ange believes that one of Alfie Dorrington or Ashley Phillips is ready to step in.
