Rangers winger and Wales international Rabbi Matondo is being linked to Ajax and Sunderland during the transfer window.
The Black Cats are looking to add attacking depth as Tommy Watson and Romaine Mundle are still sidelined due to injuries, but Ian Poveda’s return to the team in recent weeks has given Régis Le Bris a boost.
Matondo, who previously played for Stoke City and Manchester City, is reportedly still “expected” to leave Rangers this month after a proposed move to Coventry City fell through last week after Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday also expressed interest. The deal was believed to be worth approximately £2 million.
Sunderland, as well as Ajax, are still interested in signing the teenager. According to the Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Ajax is the latest club to show interest in the 24-year-old. They report that Ajax’s scouts have been “particularly charmed” by the player as they attempt to compete with Championship clubs. Matondo is a Manchester City youth academy graduate who has been on the books at Ibrox since 2022, when he signed from German club FC Schalke. During his stint in the Bundesliga, he also went on loan to Stoke City and Belgian club Cercle Brugge.
Sunderland’s interest in the Rangers player comes at the same time as Portsmouth’s confirmation of their intention to buy 22-year-old Frenchman Adil Aouchiche from Sunderland. Aouchiche has taken over for Le Bris on the wing this season, however he has fallen behind Enzo Le Fee in the pecking order.
