Trent waited for his chance to exact revenge on Maddison – and he grabbed it with both hands…
Trent-Alexander Arnold had the perfect answer in his humorous exchange with Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison, who poked fun at his colleague earlier this week on Instagram.
Maddison, who has subsequently claimed that it was all “tongue-in-cheek banter,” scored in a 2-1 victory over Alexander-Arnold and his Liverpool teammates.
Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered their first defeat of the season as a Luis Diaz goal was incorrectly ruled offside in the 34th minute while down to ten men. Due to a misunderstanding between on-field referee Simon Hooper and the VAR team at Stockley Park, supervised by Darren England, Hooper’s judgement that Diaz was in an offside position was declared valid.
The ‘human error’ in the case was the VAR team presuming Hooper’s on-field ruling was that it was given onside, when it wasn’t. And many affiliated with Liverpool were understandably enraged by this game-changing gaffe.
As a result, Klopp recognised that a Spurs-Liverpool repeat was the best answer and that, contrary to popular belief, it would not set a precedent because this case is unique.
“If not, I can say immediately, and I’m sure some people don’t want me to say it, but I think the only outcome should be a replay, not as Liverpool’s manager but as a football person.” That’s the way it is. It is unlikely to happen. The counter-argument will most likely be that once you open that gate, everyone will want it. “I believe the situation is so unusual that a replay would be appropriate.”
The pair put aside their domestic animosity to link up on international duty, and it didn’t take long for the Spurs star to mention the match between the two on his Instagram. Maddison mocked the Reds defender by posting a snapshot of the two with the caption ‘Still asking for a repeat’, accompanied by snoring, sobbing, laughing, and heart emojis.
Prior to Maddison’s social media post, Brighton & Hove Albion fans got in on the act during their 2-2 draw, yelling “We want a replay” after a penalty shout.
Alexander-Arnold sat down to talk about his England career on the Channel 4 Sport TikTok channel, and the host couldn’t help but bring up the ongoing, light-hearted issue between Maddison and the Liverpool-born ace.
Trent, you’re on point. The defender did an excellent job of putting Maddison in his place, but it’s evident from this interview that there’s nothing nasty about the exchange between the two players and that Alexander-Arnold has no grudges against his international teammate.
